Obituary of Joan Miriam McVey

Joan McVey went to the Lord on Friday, December 18, 2020 following a long struggle with cognitive impairment. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary McVey and sister to the late Mary Atkinson.

Joan is survived by her sisters Katherine Atkinson and Clare Ehrgott and brother-in-law Jake Ehrgott. Joan is also survived by her ‘sister-friend’ of 48 years Martha (Marty) Dunn. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews along with their children.

Born in Philadelphia, PA in 1936 Joan attended St. Anne School and John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School. Following high school Joan entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia and was a professed member for over 40 years. During that time, Joan ministered as a teacher – both elementary and high school and a Vocation Director ministering in Baltimore, MD; Philadelphia, PA; York, PA; and Trenton, NJ.

Joan pursued a different life journey in 1995 and went on to earn her master's in social work. She worked as an Elder Care Social Worker with MainLine Health of Philadelphia retiring in 2004.

Joan moved to Winter Haven, FL in 2008 and became a member of Saint Matthew Catholic Church in Winter Haven where she served as a Minister to the Sick touching the lives of many parishioners daily. Most recently, Joan became a member of the Resurrection Catholic Church in Lakeland, FL.

Services for Joan will be held Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church, 333 Terrace Way, Lakeland. Inurnment will be at Saint Matthew Columbarium at a later date. The services at Resurrection will be live streamed via the YouTube Link at www.rcclakeland.org.
