Violet Vegter

Obituary of Violet Vegter

Having reached 97 on February 19th, Violet Vegter (Winter Haven, Florida), after a two-week struggle, surrounded by all eleven children, was promoted into the presence of her Lord and Savior on February 21, 2022.

Violet was born in Onida, South Dakota on February 19, 1925. Her parents, Jacob & Katherine Tschetter, survived the dust bowl years, finally settling in Huron, South Dakota where Violet lived and graduated high school.

While a “Rosie the Riveter” in California, she met and married Henry Vegter in 1945. Eleven children and forty grandchildren later, they would celebrate fifty-nine years of marriage. Having lived in South Dakota and Wisconsin, since 1970 Hank and Vi made their home in Winter Haven, Florida.

In a Mennonite church, Mom accepted Jesus as her Savior at a young age. Shortly after marriage, she became a member of East Delavan Baptist Church in Delavan, Wisconsin. After the Florida move, Violet was a charter member of Winter Haven’s Faith Baptist Church. She would often share the Gospel with friends and acquaintances, inviting them to church services. After the morning service, it was not unusual for Violet to invite a family for a delicious dinner served with her homemade bread. A typical bake day yielded sixteen loaves of bread for her large family. She loved music, and all eleven children enjoyed either piano or instrument lessons, or both.

She was constantly sewing dresses for her eight daughters and mending clothes for her three sons and husband. In addition, she found time to distribute Shaklee (and several other selling adventures.) A loving and caring mother, she willingly sacrificed her time and money for others.

So that she could remain in her home for the last seven years, daughters Dianna, Carol, Judy, Karen, and Sharon gave their mother 24-hour care. With all eleven children encircling her bed—saddened but rejoicing that she was now safe in the presence of Jesus Christ, her Savior—Mom took her last breath.

Preceded in death by her husband in 2005, Violet is survived by 11 children: Dianna Marcum (Winter Haven, FL), Jerry Vegter (Lafayette, IN), Linda Woodring (Janesville, WI), John Vegter (Janesville, WI), Kathy Dean (Janesville, WI), Susan Owens (Arlington, TX), Bill Vegter (Winter Haven, FL), Carol Hopkins (Winter Haven, FL), Judy Shierling (Winter Haven, FL), Karen Dekker (Winter Haven, FL), and Sharon Peters (Wading River, NY).

There will be a visitation held at Faith Baptist Church, Winter Haven, FL at 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 28, 2022. The funeral service will be at Faith Baptist Church, Winter Haven, FL at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 1st.
