The Martins -- Ronnie, Bruce, Karen and Diane -- were my only cousins. One of the highlights of my childhood was leaving the city behind and going to visit the Martins and Turners on "the farm.". Part of Christmas vacation was a visit to Chittenango. Waiting for an adult to open the parlor doors at Grandma and Grandpa Turner's house and seeing the huge tree that nearly touched the ceiling with its strings of lights and bubbling candle ornaments. Dragging sleds up the big hill hill between the Turner and Rathbun farms and gliding back down. Summer vacation meant visiting the barns and braiding the cows' tails. Turning a calf shed into a clubhouse by shoveling out the manure and thumbtacking strips of wallpaper to the studs. Finally persuading Bruce to let me ride his English racer. And smashing into the manure spreader parked in the gravel driveway because I had never used hand brakes. How Aunt Beatrice plucked the gravel out of my road rash with tweezers and then rolled a can of frozen orange juice over my mangled thigh. Being envious of the perfect smoke rings both Ronnie and Bruce would create while smoking their cigarettes. Being sent outside with buckets to go pick elderberries when we got too rowdy in the house. Family dinners of steak, bread & butter pickles and homegrown sweet corn in the front yard while sitting on bales of hay surrounding a sawhorse and plywood table, followed by a huge enamel roasting pan filled with Aunt Beatrice's strawberry shortcake and fresh whipped cream. So many wonderful memories of the magical times spent with my handsome cousin Bruce and his siblings.

Grieving with you all. Bruce will always be with me. Always a smile for you! always making you feel so good! His "checkmate" with a teasing smile and his "t'as bien dormi ?" will always resonate as they always have ever since the first time back in 1987. Despite my deep sadness today, I am happy for the chance life has given me to share moments with you. RIP Bruce
