Obituary of Roy "Al" Porter Jr.

Roy Alton Porter “Al” 

 

Al was born September 21, 1937, in Pensacola, Florida. He obtained an Associate in Arts Degree from Pensacola Junior College, where he was active in Student Government, serving as Senate President and Student Body VP, and in sports, as Tennis Team Captain and Golf Team Member. In 1959, He received a BSBA Degree from the University of Florida, where he was in the Society for the Advancement of Management, and Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and met his future wife, Majorie Klettner of Orlando.  

 

He married Marjorie in 1960, and together they raised 3 children, all of whom have families, living in Florida and Texas with a total of 7 grandchildren, who called Al “Papa”. 

 

His business career included Insurance Company positions in Atlanta, New York, Raleigh, Foreign and Domestic Insurance Management at Ford Motor Company in Dearborn and abroad, and Managing Director at Marsh & McLennan, Inc. in Houston, Texas. 

 

Al served as an Ordained Elder at 4 Presbyterian Churches in Michigan, Texas and Florida, on Presbytery Committees in Texas, and was a member of Wekiva Presbyterian Church in Longwood, Florida. He was an avid golfer and boasted of playing golf on all 6 Major Continents. He was also a model train hobbyist, with landscaped layouts in Texas and Florida.  

 

Al is survived by daughters Sherri Porter Erwin (Don), Kerbi Porter Blake (Brent) and son C. Andrew (Drew) Porter (Julie), plus grandchildren Rebekah, Andrew, Travis, Sydney, Matthew, Andrew and Audrey.
